1972 Impala Summary Of That Year. The 1972 Impala looked much different than the 1971. It received a totally different it had a lower height grill. And revised Cat Eye Tail lights in the actual bumper. Pretty sexy to me. Now 1972 was the last year that you could get an Impala in a convertible. As a result after the 1972 year there was only one way to get a drop top. You had to get the Caprice Classic. A little more expensive but still a nice ride.
The Impala Convertible sold 6,456 units. It Placed right behind the Corvette 6,508. So if you have the Impala Convertible. You have a gold mine well that’s just my opinion. The Total Impala production for 1972 was at 597,500 units. The other series total included Caprice 178,500. And The Biscayne in its last year 20,500. And the Bel Air at 41,900 and station wagons 171,700.
A 250-cubic-inch six-cylinder engine was offered in Impala four-door sedans and sport coupes. And a three-speed manual transmission with manual steering. In the very beginning of the model year with 1,500 Impala sixes built. A very short run of early-1972 Impalas had 6 cylinders . That were built in the fall of 1971. The most of the Six-cylinder engines and three-speed manual transmissions. That was relegated only to Biscayne and Bel Air sedans.
From what I gather for the most part of the 1972 . It seems like almost all Impalas that had V8s and came standard with Turbo Hydramatic transmission. Also had the power steering and power front disc brakes.
The Impala’s now came with the 165-net 350-cubic-inch Turbo Fire V8. Optional engines included the 170-horsepower 400-cubic-inch Turbo Fire V-8. The 400 was the base Caprice/Kingswood Estate engine. The 240-horsepower 400-cubic-inch Turbo Jet V-8. Rated at 215 horsepower on station wagons. Or you could get the 270-horsepower 454-cubic-inch Turbo Jet V8
The California engines were the 165-horsepower 350 and 170-horsepower 400 Turbo Fire small-block V8s because of the state’s much stricter emission regulations. Therefore for 1972 the Astro Ventilation system was also redesigned as well . With the vents relocated from the trunk lid to the door jambs for improved reliability. From 1971 system. That was one of the major source of complaints from owners to Chevrolet and its dealers.
